Why is Budgeting so Difficult?
Are you tired of budgeting and feeling
like you are chained by your finances?
It's not uncommon to feel that way and you are not alone with
your concerns. Developing a good financial plan can be difficult to start and painful to maintain.
There are no magic pills to make it easier.
The keys to successful money management is to work on
your attitude and your perspective.
Your household financial plan is simply a tool to help you reach a particular
goal. Nothing more. While there are many
benefits to budgeting there are not as many motivations to keep
you moving forward once you develop a budget.
Therein lies the main reason why developing and living on a
strict financial plan can be so difficult. As with any
goal we need something to motivate us forward each day.
Anything that is too much like work will often be left behind
for the promise of greener, and easier, pastures. No
wonder there are so many people with weight control issues!
Realistically it is not that difficult to live on a household
budget after one has been established. Once tracking and documenting
your spending becomes a habit the rest can be rather routine.
The best thing you can do during your first month on a budget
is to find ways to keep yourself motivated. Make a list of
your goals, your dreams, your plans, and review them often.
Long term thinking will help you stay on track.
Even when your finances seem out of control you can still control
your attitude towards the situation. A positive attitude will do a lot to help you through the first
month or two so look for ways to remain positive.
Ways to Make Budgeting Less Difficult
- Put your goals in a visible place:
When you can see your goals and review them often it
will help you stay motivated. Consider either the refrigerator
or your bathroom mirror, or tape them to your TV remote control.
- Share your goals with someone:
Having an accountability partner does wonders for
many people. We all need support and encouragement.
Someone outside your family will have a different
perspective than a member of your household.
- Track the little things:
Make very small goals that can be reached in a short
time. As goals are met, cross them off the list.
The feeling of meeting any goal will make budgeting seem less
like work.
- Review your progress:
When your attitude needs an adjustment take some time
to review your progress. It can really help. If
you've been able to save some money or pay down a bill then
be encouraged and keep moving forward. Inch by inch everything's
a cinch.
- Purchase and return something:
Yes it is a bit unorthodox but sometimes it just feels
good to spend some money. Go ahead and make a purchase
and then return it. You'll feel good making the purchase
and you'll feel great returning the item and saving the money!
- Read success stories:
Find a book or website that contains stories of how
other people made their financial plan work for them.
You may even learn something to help you along the way.
- Talk to family and close friends:
If you can get others to share even a little bit about
how they are doing financially you can often find great encouragement.
It's good to confirm that you are not alone. You may also
discover that things are not as bleak for your situation as
for someone else.
- Put your faith into action:
Faith in God and trusting Him will help you keep things in proper perspective. Your financial struggles are only temporary so keep that in mind. God is Sovereign and cares about the details of your life. Look to Him for encouragement, wisdom and perseverance.
