Use a Debt Reduction Budget To Improve Your Financial Situation
If you have a household budget in place then it can be turned into
a debt reduction budget with a bit of tweaking. First, congratulations
on
developing a household budget and then sticking to your plan.
The most difficult part of a budget is the discipline it takes
to stay on target.
You will find that as you begin living on your debt reduction
budget your commitment level will need to increase. You have a goal
to get out of debt so the prize is well worth the work.
The main difference between a regular household budget and a
debt reduction budget is your discretionary spending. In order to
get out of debt as quickly as possible you must divert more money
to paying off your financial obligations.
Grab you budget, a red pen, and some extra resolve.
Below are some questions to ask yourself as you begin revising
your current household budget into your new "red-hot" debt reduction
budget.
- Can I make my own coffee instead of stopping
by Starbucks?
- Can I walk on some of my errands instead of
always driving? Bonus health benefits!
- Can I pack my own lunch instead of eating
fast food?
- Can I do without premium cable stations like
HBO and Showtime?
- Can I get by with basic cable stations or
even standard TV?
- Can I drop the extra fast Internet speed at
home?
- Can I drop the data plan for my cell phone?
Is it just a toy?
- Can I live without texting, or at least get
a flat-rate texting plan?
- Can I make my existing wardrobe last longer?
Maybe lose some weight to fit my clothes?
- Can I drop the health club (social club) membership
and workout at home?
- Can I quit smoking? Save money and improve
your health!
- Can I quit drinking beer and other alcohol?
Is the cost worth the debt?
- Can I change my own car oil?
- Can I do without junk food? Bonus health benefits!
- Can I live with a less expensive vehicle?
Is mine practical or a status symbol?
- Can I adjust insurance deductibles to reduce
costs?
- Am I wasting money on things I don't really
need?
- What else can I eliminate from my budget to
reduce my expenses?
This list is meant to get you thinking. There are probably many
other areas you can find to reduce your expenses each month.
Be creative and sacrificial and you'll eliminate your debt sooner.
Once you have identified all of the areas where you can divert
money to paying off your debt the hard part begins. Now you need
to make the changes to your household budget so it becomes a much
more aggressive debt reduction budget.
This is a difficult budget to live on so you must stay focused.
Your goal is to drastically reduce your debt or even eliminate
your debt altogether. This goal takes real discipline and commitment.
When you arrive at your destination of debt free living you will
be free of a huge burden that most people never shake off.
One word of caution. Don't cut your household budget too
deeply. You need to have a little fun during this journey. It's
good to be aggressive but not fanatical.
Make sure you save a copy of your current household budget so
you can use it as a template to build a new budget once you reach
your goal of paying off all of your debt. On that day you will be
amazed at how fast your wealth begins to grow!
The good news is that once you go through the fire of living
on a debt reduction budget you should never have to do so again.
Now go show your friends and family the benefits of a debt reduction
budget so they can enjoy the same financial freedom you have come
to enjoy!
