Make Your Goal of Getting Out of Debt a Reality
There simply is no easy way of getting out of debt unless you
win the lottery or receive a large inheritance. Those easy
out's don't require a lifestyle change so folks usually find themselves
back in the same debt boat sometime down the road.
When you finally have had enough of being in bondage to your
debt there are drastic steps you can take to eliminate your debt
and your bad habits.
A little debt can actually be a good thing as far as your FICO
credit score is concerned. A lot of debt is never a good thing
and can ruin your credit score as well as your health.
When things start going the wrong direction financially they can
have a very
negative impact
on your life.
Feeling stressed out yet?
To lower your stress you need to consider new ways of getting
out of debt. Paying 2-3 times the minimum amount of your credit
card payment will take forever to pay that card off, and it could
cost you thousands of dollars in interest.
Below are some ideas to generate extra income to be used for
getting out of debt as quickly as possible.
Many of these will not be easy, but they are possible if you
are committed to getting out of debt. The freedom you will
experience on the other side will be worth the hard work now.
- Create a household budget
A
household budget is always the first stop because you have
to understand what income you have and where it is going.
Better still, create a
debt reduction budget and really tighten things up as much
as possible.
- Get a 2nd job
Working a 2nd job is not easy and takes a real commitment of
your time. You probably have several skills that could
generate extra income (computer work, typing, writing, tutoring,
pet sitting, etc.). Get creative and you could be earning
a few hundred dollars extra each month to help pay your debts
off quickly.
- Rent out a room
If you have an extra room in your home let it generate some
income for a season. A basement room, a room over the
garage, even a den can become a great source of extra income.
Renting a room could easily generate several thousand dollars
towards your goal of getting out of debt.
- Quit your expensive habits
Here's a hard one for many people. Quit smoking, Quit
drinking alcohol, Quit partying, Quit buying lottery tickets.
You get the picture. These are all things that bring enjoyment,
but at a very high cost. Put those thousands of dollars
towards your debt instead.
- Get rid of a vehicle
Getting rid of a vehicle can be a huge monthly savings.
You eliminate a payment, fuel costs, insurance, repairs.
Even if you have to take a loss on the vehicle it's better than
being strapped to a payment you can't really afford. Look
for cheaper alternatives to commuting wherever possible.
- Move to a less expensive area
If you live in expensive areas like New York or Los Angeles
get out of the inner city. Moving to outlying areas will
save a lot of money. Moving can be expensive so don't
offset your savings by dropping a bundle on a move. Remember,
you are working on getting out of debt so don't worry about
what your friends think.
- Send the kids to public school
Private schools are wonderful and provide a great education.
They also cost an average of five thousand to ten thousand dollars
each year. Stop trying to impress your friends and send
you kids to public school. It's basically free.
After you get out of debt you can always switch back if it is
within your household budget.
- Choose to stay home
Until you have your debt paid off choose to become homebodies.
Going to movies, restaurants, live theater, night clubs, concerts,
and the like, are all quite expensive. Don't let pressure
from friends and family push you further into debt. Be
a bit boring for a while and you'll have a lot more fun in the
long run.
Getting into debt was probably a lot of fun.
getting out of debt will take
hard work and commitment. These ideas will help you pay off
your debt quickly if you make them work for you.
Take a good hard look at your situation. There are bound to
be other areas of your life that can be altered to help you reach
your goal of getting out of debt.
You may find that once you begin living a more disciplined lifestyle
it will become less like work than ever imagined. Choose to
be debt free and then take whatever steps are necessary to make
it your reality.
